What's next?
Existing Market:
For this part of the assignment, I
interviewed two friends over facetime and my sister. Due to the quarantine
environment, these were the people I had access to, but I believe that they are
in my target market. I believe that the obvious next steps for my venture would
be the development of proper infrastructure needed to facilitate a transit
system of this size. However, in my interviews, I wanted to focus on what would
be a few steps down the road rather than just the next step. So, I asked my interviewees
questions as if the theoretical transit system already existed, and what they
believe they would want from a service at that caliber. One of the first things
I discussed in an interview would be travel time. For my potential service to
be worthwhile it would need to have the capacity to get between cities quite
fast. The second thing that one of my interviewees mentioned was that, for the
system to be an adequate substitute for traditional transportation, it should invest
in comfort. Even in the biggest of cars and in first class on planes, people
tend to be packed in small spaces. However, a train could potentially offer much
greater space in comparison.
One of the biggest things to strive
for is accessibility in my current market. The system is inherently jarring in
regards to how people currently live and move, so it would be advantageous to
integrate the system into the existing framework as much as possible.
Another goal to be attained once
the physical system has been established is to construct a framework online. Platforms
already exist that would fit into this potential system, but adaptations to
them would need to be made. For example, buying tickets for travel could work
very similarly to buying plane tickets. Also, interactive maps that use GPS
already exist for local metros and even bus systems, and they could be integrated
as well.
New Market:
I have
primarily focused on how my company would target customers that would directly
use the service for transportation. However, this prompt allowed me to realize
that there are a lot of other factors that would go into the travel experience
that would be accounted for. The first I thought about would be food and drink
vendors that could provide their products for passengers. This is just one
source of economic stimulation that my potential service could provide since it
is such a large-scale project.
I believe that this part of the market is also
extremely important. My theoretical proposal itself revolves around the public
using the service, making that the most important part. However, the countless
additional aspects of business that are included in the development and maintenance of my system would play a huge role as well.
You definitely have a grand undertaking on your hands. I think you have a great point for integrating with existing architecture. In my plan I was looking at licensing my product, it's more worthwhile in my opinion to make use of what's there rather than waste resources reinventing the wheel. I think it would especially play into your hand as it would seem more like an upgraded system rather than a new one, which would make people more keen to use it.
